Project AMPLIFI's Musicians' Residency to host Royal Jelly Jive and Matt Jaffe & The Distractions, February 22-26, 2017

The Project AMPLIFI team is gearing up for the next Musicians’ Residency, February 22-26, featuring two outstanding bands, Royal Jelly Jive and Matt Jaffe & The Distractions

Both bands were selected through a competitive application process that included questions about the artists’ work to support social causes such as environmental justice, poverty eradication, and youth education. The Residency programming is then tailored to support the particular goals and creative interests identified by the artists in their applications.

During their time in the program, the Musician Residents will be working on new creative concepts, writing and practicing new music. They will be performing some of this new material live at Smiley’s Saloon in Bolinas, CA on Friday 2/25 and Saturday 2/26.

The Musicians’ Residency supports artistic achievement and musicians’ leadership by offering a program of activities designed to spark creativity, expand knowledge and expertise, and provide physical and mental rejuvenation. This short video of the 2016 Residency gives a glimpse into the mind-body restorative activities and the talks from music-industry professionals that have made the program hugely valuable for the artists’ professional development. Because of the inspiration and knowledge gained in the program, Project AMPLIFI’s alumni Residents, the Human Assembly, have dedicated their latest tour to supporting coastal cleanup and fighting against homelessness.

About the Bands

Matt Jaffe & The Distractions

Matt Jaffe & The Distractions are a rock & roll band from San Francisco. Cutting his teeth on countless open mics around the Bay Area, Matt started taking music (a little bit) more seriously when Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads offered to produce his first record. Since then, Matt has continued to churn out more songs than he can remember the words to, oversaturate the market with gigs (opening for the likes of Mavis Staples, Wilco, and Blues Traveler), and collaborate with the likes of Chuck Prophet and Tom Higgenson of the Plain White T's. Fresh off the release of their first LP, California's Burning, Matt Jaffe & The Distractions are street-teaming with the best of them to bring rock & roll back to the masses.

Royal Jelly Jive

Royal Jelly combines elements of Soul, Rock, Swing and Hip-Hop, to evoke an old-school throwback vibe and yet sound entirely fresh and new at the same time. Fronted by the enigmatic singer Lauren Bjelde, Royal Jelly leans on the sounds of swingin' horns, gritty keys and a bumpin' rhythm section to create an unforgettable, energetic live experience. Forming at San Francisco's Boom Boom Room in the summer of 2013, and releasing their debut album to a packed house at Slims in late 2014, they hit the road and and have been touring non-stop ever since. They have shared stages with notable acts such as Michael Franti, Rebrirth Brass Band, The California Honeydrops as well as performing at this past year’s Outsidelands Music Festival, Soul’d Out Music Festival, Rivertown Revival, and Redwood Mountain Faire.
